What not to do in an Escape Room?
When booking an escape game, it is important to know what to do and what not to do. This blog will guide you through common mistakes and errors that can be avoided in escape rooms in order to save you some time and energy.
Check out or blog on escape room tips to keep in mind first if you want to know good strategies to adopt before playing.
Collective Puzzle Solving: Don’t try to solve things on your own
Escape rooms are a collaborative game when you need a team to play. Even if you wanted to solve everything on your own, you could not manage to, there’s too much and some puzzles require teamwork! Work with your teammates and share everything that you do, we assure you that it is much nicer this way.
Maybe you had difficulties gathering the right team of players? For your next adventure, try to assemble a team of different profiles that work well together! Check out which player types your group could match here!
Try to not lose track of time
Escape rooms are so intense that it’s really easy to forget about the clock until time runs off. Always keep an eye on it! This way you will notice if a puzzle is taking you too long to solve or if you have enough time to spare on other parts of the room.
A matter of focus: Don’t get distracted
It’s easy to pay too much attention to small details of the rooms, but sometimes these lead to nothing and will make you lose time. If you can’t figure out how an element can work in the room, then it’s probably not relevant to the game. Same thing with keys, if they don’t immediately open a door, moving on might be a good thing to do.
Don’t give up!
Stay positive! Escape rooms can be hard but remember, there is always a way to get help out there. If you feel like leaving a puzzle behind because you can’t get anywhere with it, it might be time to ask your host for a little bit of help. Keeping a positive attitude will contribute to the overall experience and will motivate everyone in your team.
Don’t keep secrets for yourself
Communication is one of the most important things to remember while playing in an escape room. Never keep things to yourself and always share what you can see, touch or manipulate. You might get separated from the rest of your teammates, so you really want to keep in touch with them in order to manage to escape together.
Interaction with Room Elements
Rooms are fragile: Don’t break things
Elements of escape rooms may be fragile and some irreplaceable, so be careful when you handle things in there. You don’t want to throw stuff around the room and nothing requires brute force or deconstruction, so leave those screws and light bulbs alone!
Don’t unscrew, deconstruct, or throw elements of the room
What you need to do in the rooms can sometimes be hard to decipher or interpret, but you will never need to unscrew things or tear down elements of the room, unless the contrary is clearly stated. So leave your DIY instinct home and put down your tools, no need to throw anything around.
Listening to your game master is essential
When you are playing, don’t ignore what your game master is saying to you. If they call to give you a piece of advice, try to follow it as it could be very useful. Don’t ignore their help or you might end up not escaping at all! And if they tell you not to touch certain things, do as they say. Electrical sockets might just be what they are and it can be dangerous to play with them, so pay close attention to what your host is telling you.
Following Guidelines
Emergency doors are for… emergencies
In escape rooms, you are never truly locked and there is always a way to let you go out in case something happens. However, do not try to leave the room for no reason, ask for the bathroom before entering and take everything you need with you, as long as it is allowed inside. Leaving the room mid game will just break the immersion and will make you lose time, so make sure to leave this emergency door alone!
For the game flow: Stick to the rules!
When your host introduces the game to you, listen carefully, especially when it comes to rules and warnings. Some elements of the rooms might not be part of the game like fire alarms, so if you are told not to touch them, don’t even think of trying. It is mostly for your own security but also for the smooth running of the game.
About immersion: Don’t sneak phones inside
Every player is asked to leave their phones and smart watches behind before entering an escape room. They are safely locked so don’t worry about them, you will find them back after your game. Do not try to sneak them inside as we do not want any picture to be taken or any solution to be found online, this would only ruin your experience.
General things not to do
Arrive a bit early
We advise you to arrive some time in advance before your game, in case you have trouble reaching the rooms or need to use the bathroom before. Being late will take time off your clock and you will have less time to solve our rooms. We cannot grant you much additional time either as we have tight schedules to follow, so be sure to arrive a bit early just in case!
Don’t panic
Escape rooms can be stressful and full of suspense but do not panic. Remember that you are never truly locked in and that you host can let you out at any moment. Stay calm as you start your game and try to not rush things, you don’t want to unnecessarily lose time!
Try to adopt simple strategies to avoid confusion and panic, like spreading out the effort to search the room. Learn more about useful strategies to ace escape rooms here.
Always be respectful
Always respect everyone when you are playing in an escape room, whether it is your game master or your teammates. The rooms are not made to be easy and there might be some frustration but remember that there is always a solution. Ask for help! Count on the rest of your team! Work together and share everything, you’re all in this together.
Don’t show up intoxicated
One of our rules is that we do not accept tipsy players in our rooms, not even a little bit. Our hosts are free to refuse or remove players from the game if they feel they’re intoxicated and interrupting the game flow. Our escape rooms are over 100 years olds and not tipsy-proof.
We need you at your sharpest for these missions and you will want to be a master of your own mind and body to manage to escape!
