Abigail Vandermist's whereabouts
Dear prof. Vandermist,

Upon careful inspection, The Medusa Report has revealed your sister’s latest known hiding place: an abandoned Soviet radio tower by the name of Krotovina, ±25mi northwest of Nikitagrad. She wants you to come find her there, but you may need special approval from local authorities unless you’re able to gain access in some other way.

Abigail left the S.E.A. and went into hiding after discovering the following: MEDUSA is the codename for a lethal toxin developed in 1974 by order of S.E.A. director Carolien Bie. She planned to use it for complex cases, to ensure the protection of important intel. If someone couldn’t be allowed to fall into enemy hands, the S.E.A. could choose to merely feign an extraction attempt and poison them instead. Quicker, cheaper, and less likely to fail. The strategy was kept secret; even within the S.E.A. only a handful of people were in the know.

However, when MEDUSA was used for the first time, the C.I.A. (who the S.E.A. reported to) were displeased with the result: the corpse of the target, Joshua McLoughin, showed conspicuous symptoms of poisoning. Bie was ordered to cancel the MEDUSA program entirely and destroy the remaining stock.

Abigail discovered the symptoms described (a flowery smell and a contorted face) match those of your father, Simon Vandermist, when Abigail found him dead in 1975. If her suspicion is correct, someone held onto the toxin and later used it on him. These are all the findings from the report. If you would like continued assistance to find out how the MEDUSA toxin functions, or how and why your father was murdered, that would be a wholly separate case.

Kind regards,

Re: Abigail Vandermist’s whereabouts
Dear [name-here],

Thank you so much for your incredible work! To think I might be able to meet Abby again after all these years! You have given me a point on a map - a real, tangible place I can visit. At least, I appreciate that the radio tower might be difficult to reach, but I’m sure I’ll find a way. Maybe I could ask the help of Andreas Bremayer one more time.

About my father’s death: while it’s a disturbing thought that he may have been murdered, I can’t say I’m completely surprised. I was only 12 at the time and had no clue about any of this. But when someone doing his type of work dies young, there is good reason to be suspicious. I have always avoided thinking about it, but it seems there’s no escaping the truth anymore.

I’m finding it hard to know what to think of the ‘Safeguarding of Exposed Assets’. Two of the people I’ve loved most in the world have both dedicated their lives and unique skills to it, working to save the lives of vulnerable people. But hearing stories about Bie and her methods, or when I think of that TULPA woman getting to Abby before I do, it sends a chill down my spine.

Which means I have to act fast! Still, before I grab my winter coats and fly off to Russia, I might need your help one more time. I will have a quick rummage through my parents’ old belongings. If I find something that could help shed light on my father’s final years, I know who to send it to.

Helena
